North American Flyways - highways of the sky

The terms "flyway" or "migration route" describe the seasonal migration of several species of birds between breeding grounds and winter areas. There are four recognized flyways in North America: the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Central and the Mississippi. However, far from being simple "highways of the sky", the main flyways are indeed complex and dynamic realities which are influenced by many regional factors (such as weather and forage conditions) and by the natural history of the migratory species.
Indeed we may say: "To each its own … route". Below some very useful sources of information on bird migrations and flyways:

USGS (United States Geological System) - has been conducting an extensive study: the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) which monitors the status and trends of birds population in North America. On their extensive website you will find maps, data, routes and trends. They also have information about hundreds of bird species, links and news. This is a website certainly worth bookmarking: http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbs/

U.S. Fish and Wildlife - USFW is another wonderful source of information. You can find information about all sort of Bird programs. My favorite page is Migratory Bird Management Reports which lists Hunting Statistics, Migratory Bird population Status, Bird Population Surveys and other report. Additionally you can find bird I.D., Flyways information and local information.

The Flyway Councils have the responsibilities of setting migratory policies and regulations within the United States and support migratory bird research and management throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Only a couple of Councils have a website:

Pacific Flyway Council
- http://www.pacificflyway.gov/
Central Flyaway Council - http://www.centralflyway.org/
Mississippi Flyway and Atlantic Flyway - no website at this time

NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) - When you are looking for snow covering data, you can't beat the Daily Snow Cover Analysis from NOAA NOAA has a wealth of additional weather information that could help you making operational decisions or even …. educated predictions!

DU (Ducks Unlimited) - is the world's largest wetland and waterfowl conservation organization. DU has a devoted member base and they are always on the front running of bird population and migratory information.

The Nutty Birdwatcher
- they have great maps of the 4 major flyways.
